Kinkajou

The “Honey Bear” of the Tropics

Kinkajous are small, tree-dwelling mammals from the tropical forests of Central and South America. These acrobats spend most of their lives high in the canopy, where they can turn their feet backward to move easily in any direction along branches or up and down tree trunks. Their prehensile tails act like a fifth limb, helping them balance, hang from branches, and even serve as a cozy blanket while they sleep.

Though they look and act a bit like primates, kinkajous are actually relatives of raccoons. Their nickname, “honey bear,” comes from their love of raiding bees’ nests. They use their long, thin tongues to slurp honey straight from hives, and also to pick out insects like termites. Kinkajous are omnivores, enjoying fruit and occasionally small mammals, which they skillfully snare with their nimble front paws and sharp claws.

At Gatorama, kinkajous are a favorite for their playful, curious personalities—watch them swing, explore, and show off their incredible climbing skills!
