Spend some relaxing time watching the world’s largest, most social, and peaceful rodents interact in their grassy oasis. Our Capybara Commons features incredibly gentle, charismatic giant rodents that love to swim, sunbathe, and lounge together. It is a wonderful, calming stop along your park tour. Capybaras are native to the dense forests and savannas of South America, always living in close proximity to lakes, rivers, or marshes. They feed on a strictly vegetarian diet of grasses, aquatic plants, and tree bark. Because they are highly social herd animals, they live in high-density family groups of 10 to 30 individuals in the wild, a communal lifestyle we beautifully replicate in our spacious, social park habitat.

Fun Fact: Capybaras are semi-aquatic superstars! They have webbed feet to help them swim, and they can even hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes to hide from predators!
Gatorama Explorer Question: Look at where the capybara’s eyes, ears, and nose are located on their head. How does this placement help them see and breathe while swimming in the water?
