Cuban Wetlands

Meet one of the most athletic, aggressive, and highly endangered crocodilian species in the entire world. Our Cuban Wetlands exhibit features beautiful, high-jumping Cuban Crocodiles, easily recognized by their striking pebbled skin and intense curiosity. Watch in amazement as our keepers demonstrate their incredible jumping ability, leaping several feet out of the water to catch their food! In their native, highly restricted Cuban swamp habitats, they feed on fish, turtles, and small mammals. Because their wild habitat is extremely small and threatened, their wild population density is critically low and confined to just a few square miles, making our carefully managed, low-density conservation habitat vital for keeping this rare species’ genetic line strong.

  • Fun Fact: Cuban crocodiles are “galloping” crocodiles! They are highly athletic on land and can run on all fours, raising their bodies completely off the ground to pursue prey.

  • Gatorama Explorer Question: How high can a Cuban crocodile jump out of the water? (Hint: Check out our feeding demonstrations to see them show off their jumping skills!)
