Nuisance Alligator Pod

See conservation in action through our work with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s SNAP (Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program) initiative. This temporary acclimation habitat is home to rescued nuisance alligators that have been rehomed to Gatorama for a safe, permanent sanctuary. It is a fantastic educational space to learn about coexistence and alligator safety in Florida. These animals are collected from suburban freshwater canals, golf course ponds, and backyard lakes, where they feed opportunistically on fish, turtles, and whatever small prey is available. Because human development overlaps with alligator habitats, local population densities can become unsafely high in residential areas, making our moderate-density sanctuary pond a vital tool for reducing human-wildlife conflict.

  • Fun Fact: Alligators are naturally afraid of humans! They only become “nuisances” when people feed them, which causes them to lose their natural fear and associate humans with food.

  • Gatorama Explorer Question: Read our alligator safety sign. What are two simple things humans can do to safely share Florida’s waterways with wild alligators?
