Pythons of the Glades

Take an educational look at the heavy-bodied snakes that have captured headlines across the state of Florida. At Python Cove, you can get face-to-face with docile residents like Bleu, our sweet and gentle Ball Python. Our keepers are always on hand to teach visitors about snake biology, habitats, and how we can work together to protect Florida’s native ecosystems. In their native West African grasslands and savannas, ball pythons dwell in underground burrows and agricultural fields, feeding primarily on small rodents and ground-nesting birds. They maintain a naturally moderate population density in their native range, living as solitary hunters, which we reflect in our low-density, quiet exhibit spaces designed to keep these gentle snakes calm and comfortable.

  • Fun Fact: Ball pythons get their name because when they feel scared or threatened, they roll themselves into a tight, perfect ball with their head protected right in the middle!

  • Gatorama Explorer Question: Touch a snake at Reptile Cove! Does Bleu’s skin feel slimy, or does it feel dry, smooth, and cool to the touch?
